Safeguarding and protecting young people in netball
England Netball and the GNA are committed to creating and maintaining a safe and positive environment for all young people involved in netball. It accepts a responsibility to help safeguard the welfare of young people and protect them from harm. Every individual and organisation within the netball community has a role and responsibility to help ensure the safety and welfare of young people.
Each club under the GNA is required to appoint a Club Safeguarding Officer. It is important to register with England Netball if you are a Club Safeguarding Officer. You will receive regular updates and information from England Netball. Also everyone should complete this basic England Netball online safeguarding course
All those who coach U18s need a DBS check!
In order to ensure the safeguarding of players and best coaching practice, all netball coaches are required to carry out a DBS check every three years (Disclosure and Barring Service, previously known as CRB, Criminal Records Bureau). DBS checks can be submitted online. The admin cost of the online DBS check is £11.40.
England Netball have recently updated their guidance information on DBS checks.
The DBS check is now for anyone over 16 years (no self disclosures anymore for 16-18 year olds as they can now do the full DBS check).
The checks are still not portable so anyone working in the above roles in netball need to complete a check through England Netball.
Safeguarding Officers
It is a membership requirement for all clubs to have a Club Safeguarding Officer and provide details of this person on affiliation.
The Club Safeguarding Officer plays an important role in the welfare of the members of a club. They help to develop a safe and inclusive environment for all people at the club, give advice and listen to concerns about safeguarding and well-being issues and are a link in the reporting process which helps protect the welfare of the netball community.
Amber can be contacted by anyone with a concern and is also to provide guidance and support to Club Safeguarding Officers.

If you hold a position of trust within the Association either at club or island level the GNA recommend that as a minimum your complete the England Netball Safeguarding on-line training and have undertaken a basic emergency first aid course. A position of trust can include the following but the list is not exhaustive:

It is best practice to complete these courses every three years.
First Aid Course
The course will provide you with basic First Aid and emergency training . This course teaches everyday first aid skills, which are invaluable when accidents happen around the everyday . The course includes CPR for adults, bleeding, burns, chest pain, choking in adults, unconscious casualty, fainting, bites & stings, sprains and strains.

This workshop will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse, and give you the tools and confidence you need to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career.

On this workshop, you will learn how you can support, empower, and safeguard children participating in netball. You must have attended a Safeguarding & Protecting Children workshop previously.

Remember it is not your duty to investigate a child protection concern but it is your job to report it
The ISCP is formally known as the Islands Child Protection Committee. It is a multi-agency committee with representatives from the public, private and voluntary sectors. It was given legal status in the children (Guernsey and Alderney) Law, 2008. Its main purpose is to enhance the safety of children and young people in the islands through promoting effective co-ordination and co-operation between agencies providing services to children and families.
